We are a grad student-led committee in the Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology (EEMB) department at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). DEIW was initially established as DEI by three graduate students of color who were tired of the EEMB department's inadequacy in addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Wellness was added later as an ancillary fourth objective to ensure that efforts to promote general graduate student wellness would be truly intersectional.
